Why do Hernias Occur?
A Hernia occurs when the inside layers of the abdominal muscle have weakened, resulting in a bulge or tear. In the same way that an inner tube pushes through a damaged tire, the inner lining of the abdomen pushes through the weakened area of the abdominal wall to form a small balloon-like sac. This can allow a loop of intestine or abdominal tissue to push into the sac. The hernia can cause severe pain and other potentially serious problems that could require emergency surgery.
Factors that affect or may potentially predispose to formation of hernias maybe the following:
- With Increasing age, there is a tendency for the abdominal muscles to become thinner and weaker.
- Previous Surgical Procedures – Any surgery on the abdominal wall creates a weakness in the abdominal muscles due to slow or incomplete healing and pre disposes to future hernias. An incision from the surgery itself would cause a weak spot. The bigger the incision is made, the wider area of tissue is affected. Therefore, the higher is the chance of developing a Hernia (Incisional hernia, In particular.)
- Family History/ Familial Tendency/ History of a previous hernia – It is known that a person who has had a hernia on one side of the abdomen may develop a hernia on the other side. There are also instances of several members in the same family developing hernias. This is due to that fact that the family has a genetic tendency of forming weaker Collagen (A chemical substance that cements body tissues together.)
- Multiple Pregnancies
- Strenuous Physical Activity
- Chronic Cough (as aggravated by smoking and other serious lung conditions)
- Lifting heavy objects especially when done on regular basis; some strenuous blue-collared
- Chronic Sneezing due to severe untreated allergies
- Presence of fluid in the abdominal cavity
- Excessive exercise
- Obesity
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Persistent straining during urination or bowel movement (with Constipation.)
